Add a Search Engine to Website

If you feel your website could need a search engine, this is the place to learn from. There are practically two ways to add a search engine to your website.

    1) Outsource the search engine

    2) Host the search engine

    Outsource the Search Engine

All you have to do installing an outsourced search engine is to add few lines of code to the page you want.

There is a chance that you can affect to the appearances of your engine's result pages. Bad thing is that you don't have pretty much of control over your search engine and ads may be shown on the result pages.

Create Profit From Your Search Engine

Despite everything, Google has made it possible for anyone to add a search engine to their site. You can modify the looks and decide if you want to show ads or not, the profit from ad clicks goes for you! This is how to create a modified Google search engine:

    1) Create a Google account. It is instant, easy and free.

    2) Choose AdSense from the main menu of your account and apply for it. Note that you must have a website with some content already to get approved. This usually takes up to few days.

    3) Now you have time to create your own search engine. Choose it from the main menu of your account and start creating. To make a revenue from your search engine, you must write your AdSense publisher ID to the field in the "Make money" tab.

    4) Add the customized search engine to your website and enjoy!

    Host Your Own Search Engine

This means that you have complete power over your search engine, you can modify anything that you want etc. Unfortunately these search engines are not so good as the big corporation or paid search engines so I recommend using outsourced ones.

There is quite a bundle of own search engine scripts around there, Most of them are written in Perl/CGI or ASP so they require some knowledge to configure them. Make sure your web host supports the certain scripting.

A good place to start looking for search engines is CGI Resource Index
