Choosing the Best Website Keywords
It is too common a misunderstanding that keywords on a website can be generally anything as long as they are somehow linked to the context. To get possibly more visibility and revenue from your website, you should research and build a list of keywords and eventually implement the list into your website.
This article will be telling the generic things you should consider while choosing the best keywords for your website or if your website has many different topics, create many lists.
Note that there are two kinds of keywords research for a website. An ambitious webmaster and marketer will take a look and succeed at the both steps:
1) Keywords satisfying search engines.
2) Keywords satisfying visitors.
Creating the Keyword List Prototype
It's best and the clearest to compile the first keyword list, the one that draws the rough lines around the wholity.
1) Spy the keywords of other websites. This may sound quite illegal but I must say that many topics have competition and you must get yourself in there somehow. This is one good way, look at the source code of your competitor's website and study the meta keywords. Especially dive into the source code of the top websites. You may even get more ideas for content.
If you don't know where to find meta keywords, look for meta and keyword combination in the head (the beginning) part of a web page.
2) Think outside the box. This simply means that you should think like the visitors think. Brainstorm what your visitors might be searching from the Internet and others what you might think as relevant ones.
3) Use a keyword research tool. So far, WordTracker is one of the best keywords tools to generate related keywords and phrases based on any website topic. Test multiple keywords as a starter and you should be able to dig deeper and find a variety of keywords to your taste.
4) Combine keywords already in the list together. Generate phrases or sentences that make sense and might be searched for. Make a spreadsheet to easen up your work.
Refining Your Keyword List
Now you should have quite a large keyword list, now it's time to refine it. Use the WordTracker tool and list up the search amounts for each keyword or phrase.
Take away the keywords that have very low popularity, then rate the rest of the keywords with the following fashion:
1) Evaluate the keyword competition. Take your keyword to a search and take a write down the number of search results. This says the relative amount of competition. The worst case scenario for you is millions of results but no problem, there are other keywords left in the list. WordTracker tool has a keyword effectiveness index (KEI) calculator which counts both keyword popularity and the competition revealing the better keywords for you.
Another thing, more a keyword has competition more it has bidding on the ads. This is a good thing for you because the KEI counter gives you relatively the best keywords and probably the best payout amount.
2) Use analytic tools. Use a tool like OneStat.com to find out how your visitors actually found you, what keywords they used. Seek for some common pattern among them.
3) Note if the visitor is buying now. For online shop keepers, the most relevant keywords are those having high odds of converting a visitor into a paying customer. What the potential customer types into the search engine may reflect if there is a purchase happening soon. An example where a searcher is propably ready to buy is "dog food prices" compared to "dog food". Try thinking more for this kind of "ready-to-buy keywords".
You are ready with your shiny new keyword list. Now your keywords are placed into your website. Do the following things:
4) Use your search engine optimization skills and insert the keywords into right spots of your website. Headlines, topics, titles, meta keywords etc. are generally the best places. Once again, a tool comes handy. WebPosition's Page Critic is useful, it provides information about the keyword frequency and many other things concerning your keyword situation.
Use Your Keywords Powerfully
Placing the keywords isn't everything. Another thing to think about is creating text that sells. Write your text so it has something appealing, use colorful language and other ways to improve the quality of the text.´
If you are an owner of a web shop and find it hard to compile descriptions from some of your keywords, set up an informational part or even a whole new website about your online shop's topic and link it to your store. This can promote your online shop to skies. If you don't want to create a whole new domain, there might be a chance to get a subdomain like http://www.info.mysite.com
